The students are getting a good grasp on the routine of sorting their spelling words. The sorts help students learn the sound patterns and rules, and some of those tricky exceptions to the rules. The Words Their Way program calls these exceptions "oddballs". These are typically words that look like others in the same category, but do not make the same long or short vowel sound. For example, in the sort below, "said" follows the same CVVC (consonant-vowel-vowel-consonant) pattern as "rain", but does not make the same long a sound as rain (and the others in this category- brain, train, pain, etc).
