Weekly Highlights: Oct. 23 - 27th

We had a wonderful time on our field trip to City Hall & the Fire Station and learned so much!  At City Call we saw the council chambers, and had a try at being mayor and council members with a vote on a new classroom rule. Councilman Ackerman talked about the important decisions that are made in the council chambers that affect our city.  At the Fire Station we had the opportunity to see the various parts of the fire trucks, learn about the tools that are used by fire fighters, and had several questions answered about the daily life of a firefighter. Many thanks to Glorianna's dad, Danison's mom & Clemente's mom for joining us on this trip and sharing photos!

In Social Studies we have been learning more about the way businesses run. We learned the difference between natural resources, capital resources and human resources. We used the example of cotton candy break down which part of the cotton candy making/selling process falls into each type of resource category. (See photo)  We have also been learning about assembly lines and we created our own assembly lines in the classroom to make Thank You notes for the councilman and fire fighters for allowing us to visit on Thursday. Each child had a job, listed on the slide below.  We will personalize the cards next week.

Weekly Highlights: October 16 - 20th

This week we learned a popular new math game called "Salute!"  This is a great one to play at home with #1 - 9 from a regular card deck.  See below for directions.  We also explored making shapes with geoboards, as well as odd, even & double facts with dominoes.

On Thursday we were visited by the U of M Society of Women Engineers.  They helped the children conduct a rock hardness and acidity test, which fit in perfectly with our geology unit.
