Life Cycle of a Butterfly

Over the past two weeks, we have been studying real caterpillars and watching their journey towards become adults.  We observed and recorded details about the baby caterpillars that were only about a centimeter long when they arrived to us, and watched with amazement at how quickly they have grown from day to day.  Below you can see the transformation that occurred most recently, only over the course of one weekend!

Friday - large happy caterpillars:

Monday - chrysallises!

Happy Earth Day!

Today we celebrated Earth Day with a visit from Cathy from the Leslie Science Center, who taught us all about reptiles.  Ask your child about the creatures they got to observe and touch.

Today we also read books about our world, and did something towards caring for it: We all put on some plastic gloves and went out to help clean up litter on the Angell School grounds.  The children were very enthusiastic about doing this good deed!

UMMA Field Trip

We had a wonderful time on our field trip to UMMA.  Thanks again to all the parents who joined us!  Some of the following photos are courtesy of Mr. Stone and Mrs. Brennan-- thank you!

For her birthday celebration, Charlotte shared a beautiful slide show with us about her summer in Greece.

Personification & Tongue Twisters

Last week we learned about the literary skilled called "personification" where objects or animals are given human-like qualities. We read books that use personification, and talked about examples in movies as well. The students wrote their own phrases or poems using this technique.  We also learned about tongue twisters, which are poems that are hard to say- often because they use alliteration or words with similar vowel patterns.  These were especially fun for the children to test out!
