Weekly Highlights: October 2 - 6th

This week started with a fantastic trip to the Fox Preserve Gravel Pit.  Huge thanks to  Mrs. Cowen, Mrs. Mora, Mr. Kasotakis, Mrs. Ganger, Mrs. Park, Mr. Fohrman, Mrs. Tucker & Mrs. Williams for joining us as chaperones (and for sharing some of the photos included below)!  We looked for properties that give clues about what type of rocks we discovered: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.

This week the students had an opportunity to put on their architect hats and create their own structures using base ten blocks.   (See the diagram below which demonstrates block values.) After building, their next task was to count the total value of blocks they used.  Some students chose to count as they built.  We will use base ten blocks throughout the year for hands-on practice and understanding of place value.  We also explored with ordering dominoes, which is one way to  reinforce number sense using tactiles.

In Social Studies we have been talking about our community and ways we can have a positive impact on those in need. We read a book called "Me on the Map" which allows children to think about themselves and their place in this large world. We talked about ways we might be able to raise money for a local organization right here in Ann Arbor.  The students learned a little about the following three organizations and then voted on which they will be supporting this fall:

Jewish Family Services (JFS): Refugee resettlement services https://jfsannarbor.org/programs-services/international-services/resettlement/

Ronald McDonald House https://rmhcannarbor.org/

Mott's Children's Hospital http://www.mottchildren.org/giving/ways-to-give/gifts-in-kind

Some students already have knowledge and connections to these services, as we currently have students at Angell who are refugees, as well as students who are
residents of Ronald McDonald House, and several children have either been to or know someone who has been a patient at Mott's.  Other children had questions and natural curiosity about the people who are in need of these organizations. We had a great discussion about how although some of the stories about these families might be sad, these organizations are helping to make their lives so much better, and that we, as members of the community, can help make a positive impact.

We will be working on this project in collaboration with Ms. Hepner's & Mrs. Brennan's classes. This week we brainstormed ways we might help to raise money for one of these organizations. (See the photo below of our Brain Frame called "How can we raise money?"  The students had an endless list of ideas and we ran out of time before we could get them all up on the board! More on this project in the coming weeks.
