Highlights: April 30 - May 11th

In PLTW we have continued our work on properties of matter. Students worked in small groups to conduct trials to learn more about conductors and insulators.  Students determined which materials between foil, paper and foam allowed the most heat from a hot pad through, measuring each temperature with a thermometer. The students then began the planning and design process of their coolers, using what they learned from the results of their experiments.

Eliezer's mom came in to teach the class about Venezuela. We learned about the beautiful nature and wildlife of this country and even got to sample some delicious Venezuelan chocolate!

We had a lovely time on our trip to the U of M Museum of Art. Big thanks to Mackenna's grandmother, Elsa's mom and Arianna' mom for joining us on this trip!

In writing we have been working on paragraph formation. We are using "umbrella" graphic organizers to plan our paragraph topics and supporting details.  Our focus has been "opinion" based writing, for example "Winter is the best season because _________."  Some students completed an opinion based paragraph and next moved on to research/non-fiction writing based on factual information.

In Math we have been learning about the US Customary as well as Metric system. We have been using "personal references" to compare common units of measurement with everyday objects.

We enjoyed watching our baby caterpillars complete the process of metamorphosis and transform into butterflies. We released the butterflies last week!

We were sad to say goodbye to Rocco last week and wish him the very best in his new home in North Carolina!
