Highlights: April 2nd - 13th

We have had so many wonderful experiences squeezed into these past two weeks!

Mrs. Mora visited a few times to teach us all about Chile. We learned about the landscape, the food, traditional clothing and toys, the national flower, famous Chilean poets & Nobel prize winners, and much much more.  We thank Mrs. Mora for her generosity of time and efforts in making these experiences so engaging for the class.

In Social Studies we reflected on our visit to Burns Park just before Spring Break. Although Burns Park has an elementary school, the part of the playground we visited is one of the city's public parks. The children made a "Categorizing Brain Frame" with a partner and came up with several "Strengths" and "Areas of Improvement" for the park. We then compiled our ideas as a class, and narrowed it down to a few suggestions that the majority of the class felt strongly about.  The surveys that came home in the homework folders can be given to neighbors, family members, siblings, friends. Any responses should be turned in by next Friday with the usual homework. (They can have an extra day since they have more work to do!)

Our visit to Aventura was a fantastic experience. The children learned about restaurant terminology, the various staff members of a restaurant team, the history behind the food which is traditional tapas (small plates) from Valencia, Spain, and of course the highlight was meeting Chef Raul and tasting some of his specialties including Pan a la Catalana, Croquetas de Manchego, and Patatas Bravas.  Big thanks to Michael Kasotakis, Grace Carpenter, Valeria Mora and Chris Schulte for joining us on this trip.  The students wrote Thank you notes to the Aventura staff to reflect, show appreciate, and of course, practice our letter-writing skills.

In Math we have been working on "Partial Sums" double digit addition (see parent note with Math homework sheet that explains the process).  We spent some extra time on this as it is a very important skill and one that requires multiple parts.  We also began learning about arrays and made a Telling Brain Frame several examples of arrays that we see in our every day lives.  Arrays are a great way to visualize repeated addition / multiplication and also connects to fractions.
