Occupations

We wrapped up our unit on service jobs by learning all about  the job of a veterinarian. Levi's mom, Michele Forbes, came in to talk to us about her work as a veterinarian at Compassionate Care Animal Hospital.  We all learned so much about this field and also about animal safety!

Thank you, Michele!

Limericks

This week we wrapped up our poetry unit with limericks.  We explored several poems of the classic poet, Edward Lear.  The children loved the silly nature of these poems and the sing-song rhyme scheme they employ.  Below are a few of Edward Lear's limericks, as well as a few written by the students.  The children had a wonderful time sharing a few of their own limericks with each other as well!  Poetry books will be coming home next week.

Sing a Song of Aesop!

Here are some photos from our dress rehearsal, parent performance and school performance this past week.  The children had a wonderful time and it's always so delightful to see how they grow through this experience.  Thank you all for your endless support practicing lines, preparing costumes, and coming to share in the fun!

Butterflies!

On Monday we came to school to discover that most of our butterflies had hatched out of their chrysalises over the weekend! The children enjoyed letting them go and watching them flutter about in our outdoor learning area.

Geometry

In Math we have been spending a good chunk of time studying geometrical shapes and their attributes. This week we observed several quadrilaterals and made the following observations of what they all had in common:

straight sides
closed shape (no openings)
four sides
four vertices
four angles
four corners

We then discussed how other polygons follow the same rules and pattern. Ex. Pentagons all have five vertices, five angles and five corners, etc. We discussed the prefixes and their meanings as well:
Tri in triangle means three
quad = four
penta = five
hexa = six
hepta - seven
octo = eight

Next we played a game in partnerships where both students look at the same attribute card
(ex. quadrilateral with only two parallel sides) and then each draw their own shape following the description. The children then reveal their drawings to one another and compare how they are similar and how they are different.  For example, both shapes in the first photo are pentagons, but each look very different. The children had fun then turning their shapes into pictures.
