Our first week together was very full! We got to know one another, we created class rules together, and went over many routines and procedures!
First day fun with Wikki Sticks!
On the first day of school we read our first Mr. Men story. I apologize in advance because this series has been known to become highly addictive to 7 year olds! It's a great way to teach higher level vocabulary, as well as talk about emotion and characters.
The students partnered up and interviewed each other on Tuesday. On Wednesday as a whole class, the children each shared something they learned about the classmate they interviewed.
This week the children worked in groups to complete 100 piece puzzles. This was a great team building activity and the children worked very cooperatively on these challenging puzzles!
Ask your child about the "I Wonder" circle that we will use as we explore scientific concepts this year. Your child can also tell you about how we used the circle before/during/after our experiment to answer the question "What will happen if I try to color on wet paper?"
One of the tools we use in writing throughout all the grades at Angell is called "EmPower". EmPower uses a graphic organizer called "Brain Frames" that help students plan their writing. There are six different types of brain frames. This week we used the "sequencing" brain frame to practice our "Getting Ready for Home" routine:
chairs up > pick up scraps off floor > stand by desk > wait for table to be called > check mailbox > get backpack/lunchbox > put backpack/lunch under desk > line up
We also learned about the "relationships" brain frame, and used it as a way to find out about each other's nicknames!
In math this week, we reviewed the concepts of number sequences as well as adding mixed change. I will be sending an email soon requesting a specific number of each type of coin for the children to use during the year for practice and math games that we will be playing regularly.
