Welcome Munther!

Today we welcomed a new student, Munther, to our classroom.  The students have been happily showing him the routines and procedures.  Welcome to Angell, Munther!

Life Cycle of a Butterfly

For the past two weeks we have been enjoying our new class pet- baby caterpillars! Well, they arrived as babies but are quickly growing.  The students have been observing and recording their growth, and are eagerly anticipating their formation into chrysallis and butterflies!

Doing Our Part!

Last Friday we took advantage of the sunshine and walked to the park up the road to do a little clean-up.  In Social Studies we have been learning about how we can make a difference in our community, and this is one small way!

Poetry

April is poetry month!  So far this month we have been learning about Haikus (which originated in Japan, and was a perfect tie-in), tongue twisters (alliteration), free verse, limericks, metaphors and similes.  Today the children enjoyed sharing their poetry books with each other.  Our poetry writing will likely extend into May, as it is a very popular writing unit among second graders!

Spatial Awareness

In math this week we have been working with pattern blocks to tile various surfaces. This not only helps with spatial awareness, but also is a great introduction to (or reinforcement of) multiplication and repeated addition of equal groups.

Japan!

Huge thanks to Tomiyo Wemert, who organized a wonderful afternoon of Japanese cultural activities for the students this past Monday.  We had a wonderful time learning about traditional Japanese toys, trying on Kimonos, writing in calligraphy, making origami, and making sushi! Many thanks to Demaris (Dimitra's mom) and Anne (Clara's mom) for coming in to help as well!  Thank you all for celebrating International Night with us on Thursday.  It has been a very full and exciting week!
